The neighborhood was named for Colonel Robert Gould Shaw who commanded the all-black 54th Regiment in the Civil War. (You may recall Matthew Broderick’s character from the critically acclaimed film, Glory.) At its center was the O Street Market, a popular gathering place in the late 19th century. Originally called “Uptown,” Shaw was the centerpiece of African-American culture during the Harlem Renaissance and is the hometown of jazz great Duke Ellington. [ from the website citymarketato.com ]
